How I Met Your Dad will not be making its debut on CBS this year after the network failed to be blown away by the spin-off pilot that Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Emily Spivey presented. CBS ordered the pilot from the How I Met Your Mother creators before the long-running hit comedy came to an end this season.

The new concept sees Greta Gerwig play the equivalent of Josh Radnor's Ted Mosby whilst Meg Ryan provides the voiceover as Bob Saget did in the original show. The story follows Gerwig as Sally who recounts the tale of how she met her children's father throughout the proposed series.

Despite having had high hopes for the spin-off, CBS explained during their Upfront press conference that the pilot isn't what they hoped it would be. "There were elements of the pilot that didn't work out," said CBS' Nina Tassler, before stating that the powers that be at the network "love this show and we love these producers," according to E! Online.

"It's funny. It shares the heart and soul with the original show, so it has the sweetness and the funniness," Gerwig, who was also tapped to joing the writers' room if the show was picked up for a series, told E! News in March.

Perhaps it was this similarity to the original that meant the show didn't feel so exciting for the network bosses. After all, all the HIMYM in-jokes and character references are pretty confined to the franchise and may feel overworked if the creators tried to make, say, a female copy of Barney in the new series.

The show has gone from being one of the most buzzed-about pilots for next season to having stalled almost straight away. Sources talking to E! say that CBS has until midnight tonight to pick up the series before the bid expires.

20th Century Fox, the show's producer, had apparently been waiting for that bid to expire before showing the pilot to other networks, but has already taken steps towards moving the show elsewhere with preliminary discussions underway.
