Jackie Review

Essential

Rather than make a standard biopic about the most famous First Lady in American history, this film centres on just a few days in her life to offer some telling insights not only into the woman in question but also the culture of celebrity and the nature of political legacies. Yes, it's a complex, provocative film, artfully directed by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain (Neruda) and anchored by a riveting performance from Natalie Portman.

The story is set in the aftermath of John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, as Jackie (Portman) retreats to her seaside home in Massachusetts to make plans for her future. She is visited by a journalist (Billy Crudup), who asks her about her experience in the days after her husband (Caspar Phillipson) was shot while sitting next to her in the back of a car. During these days, she has been faced with some big questions. Who is she arranging the funeral for? Herself? Her children? The American public? The future generations who will remember her husband? The only people she can confide in are her brother-in-law Bobby (Peter Sarsgaard), her assistant Nancy (Greta Gerwig) and a straight-talking priest (John Hurt). Her husband may have been a relentless philanderer, but Jackie is consumed by grief and unsure where her life will go now.

20th Century Women Trailer

Jamie doesn't live a normal life, he's raised by his single mom and lives in a house occupied by tenants. It's the start of the summer of 1979 in Santa Barbara and Dorothea Fields is not only the matriarch of her little family but she also looks over the young people that seem to join her household.

At that moment in time the world was experiencing much turmoil and uncertainty as well as huge gains in personal freedom and all these things convinced Dorothea to ask other women involved in Jamie's life to help mould and shape him into a well-adjusted person. Mother's and Son's often have tumultuous relationships and Jamie loves his mom but can't help but constantly think that she's a know it all with all the answers.

Abbie is a young lodger in the household and becomes particularly influential in Jamie's life, she's a free spirit with a punk attitude to life that really appeals to the teenager attempting to find himself. Whilst his next door neighbour Julie is going through some issues of her own but also becomes a huge influence on the boy's life.

Jacqueline Bouvier was always a highly independent woman, even when she was a debutant; she made a lasting impression on most who she met. Jackie always aspired to be a journalist and in 1947 she was offered a prestigious junior editor position at Vogue magazine, though she decided not to take the position in the end. Having travelled to various countries and lived in Paris for a short time, Jackie was an incredibly worldly lady and it's not so much of a surprise that she caught the attention of many men.

John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline met through social groups and they were both attracted to one another for many reasons and had similar life experiences. John was a rising star of politics and after his election to the Senate, he proposed to his love. Her answer didn't come as quickly as Kennedy might've hoped as she was assigned by the Washington Times-Herald to cover the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in the UK; ever the professional Jackie completed her assignment before taking Kennedy up on his offer. In 1953 the couple were married at one of the social events of the century. Though Kennedy was dedicated to his work, the deep love between the two was evident to all and Jackie was a constant support for her husband who eventually became president in November 1960.

Jackie's style, elegance and grace made her a much loved First Lady but more than that, she was dedicated to President Kennedy's vision and shared his burden.

Maggie's Plan Review

Good

A New York comedy with vivid characters and a contrived plot, this feels rather a lot like a Woody Allen movie. Although writer-director Rebecca Miller keeps it rather cute and silly, avoiding the more pointed issues raised in her script. Still, the snaky, farcical story is very entertaining, and the witty performances from the terrific cast make it well worth a look.

Greta Gerwig plays Maggie, a woman who has given up on finding the perfect man, so she sets out to have a child using a donation from a pickle entrepreneur (Travis Fimmel). Then just after she has the fertilisation procedure, she falls for her fellow professor John (Ethan Hawke), who's looking for a reason to leave his haughty Danish wife Georgette (Julianne Moore). Three years later, Maggie and John are settled down with their toddler daughter. But Maggie is frustrated that John has become aimless, unable to finish his long-in-the-works novel. She's also somehow ended up raising his and Georgette's kids (Mina Sundwall and Jackson Frazer). So she hatches a plan to get Georgette to take him back.

The premise is ingenious, and Miller fills it in with colourful characters and lots of detail, plus several convenient twists and implausible turns of the plot. This keeps the film from ever becoming more than a bit of nutty fluff, but at least it's entertaining fluff. Gerwig and Hawke are superb as self-involved people whose relationship develops in surprisingly resonant ways. Both are sympathetic but not hugely likeable in the way they remain oblivious to everyone around them, and watching them interact is a lot of fun. But the entire film is stolen by Moore in a hilariously spiky turn as the high-maintenance Georgette, who peers imperiously through her riotous array of furs and scarves but can only barely hide the fragile person inside.

Maggie's Plan Trailer

Maggie's has always been practically minded and now that she's in her thirties and has decided that it's time to have a child, the small issue of not having a partner isn't going to stand in her way. She's never really experienced being head over heels in love so when she meets John Harding (an aspiring novelist) their instant connection comes as a shock to the sometimes bookish Maggie.

As Maggie and John's relationship becomes more and more serious, Maggie seeks advice from her best friends. Falling for John isn't just a usual case of starting a relationship, John has many other people to consider - namely his wife and kids. John has been married to a Danish academic for years but over recent times, the couple have become more and more distant.

Soon John realises that Maggie is a source of inspiration for him and he's ready to move on from his prior life. We fast-forward 2 years down the line and the couple have a child but Maggie isn't quite as head over heels in love with the man she thought John was. Maggie cannot bring herself to leave John and decides to come up a highly unconventional way to try and find a solution to her current predicament.

The Reason Why CBS Didn't Pick Up The 'How I Met Your Dad' Pilot

Greta Gerwig

CBS shocked the television world on Wednesday (May 14th) when they passed on the much talked about sitcom, 'How I Met Your Dad.'

A pilot of the show, a spinoff of the hugely successful 'How I Met Your Mother,' was ordered by CBS last November (2013), but it creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, along with Emily Spivey, failed to captivate the network's executives.

But after casting names like Meg Ryan and Greta Gerwig, why did the pilot not get picked up?

'How I Met Your Dad' Stalls After CBS Doesn't Bite Pilot

Greta Gerwig Meg Ryan Bob Saget Josh Radnor

How I Met Your Dad will not be making its debut on CBS this year after the network failed to be blown away by the spin-off pilot that Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Emily Spivey presented. CBS ordered the pilot from the How I Met Your Mother creators before the long-running hit comedy came to an end this season.

Greta Gerwig
Greta Gerwig Takes The Lead In 'How I Met Your Dad.'

The new concept sees Greta Gerwig play the equivalent of Josh Radnor's Ted Mosby whilst Meg Ryan provides the voiceover as Bob Saget did in the original show. The story follows Gerwig as Sally who recounts the tale of how she met her children's father throughout the proposed series.

How I Met...Greta Gerwig: Ten Facts About The 'How I Met Your Dad' Star

Greta Gerwig

Now that Greta Gerwig's been cast in the lead of 'How I Met Your Mother' spin off 'How I Met Your Dad' the indie actress is taking a big leap into the mainstream. However before she gets just too famous to keep up with, here are ten facts about the actress to impress your friends with.

Greta GerwigGreta Gerwig, Ted Mosby with indie-cred

1.Greta is a California girl really. She was born in Sacramento, where her mother worked as a nurse and her father worked in a bank. She then went on to study at the all-female Barnard College in New York where she switched from a degree in dance and music to English and philosophy.

With Greta Gerwig Cast As The Lead, The Upcoming HIMYM Spin-Off Might Still Stand A Chance

Greta Gerwig

Not only is How I Met Your Dad being made this year – well, the pilot is anyway – it already has its lead too. According to E!News, Greta Gerwig has been cast for the upcoming pilot. Now, the show itself might be a bit ill-advised (How I Met Your Dad sounds just like the kind of project a network develops to squeeze out the very last bits of profit from a show about to end) but with actress/writer/director/producer/all-round Renaissance lady Gerwig attached to the project, there might be some life in the spin-off yet.

Greta Gerwig, Berlin International Film Festival
Gerwig's is the first casting to be announced. There might be hope for this project yet.

Gerwig has been chosen for the role of Sally – a sweet and free-spirited lady in her late twenties, whose biggest issue is that she’s afraid of growing up. Sounds painfully relatable for a large majority of twenty-somethings. There’s a twist from the original too – unlike Ted, Sally is already married at the beginning of the show. According to creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, she and the audience will quickly realise that marriage isn’t really the right choice for Sally. So with the help of her friends, Sally will go on a quest, full of bad dates and (hopefully) hilarious antics.

Greta Gerwig Gives Performance Of A Lifetime In 'Frances Ha' [Trailer]

Greta Gerwig Noah Baumbach Ben Stiller

Noah Baumbach's new move Frances Ha is easily one of the best reviewed movies of the year. A 93% fresh score on review aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes sees in climb inside the year's Top 20, though most critics agree that Greta Gerwig's performance as an apprentice dancer in New York is the year's best.

Shot in black and white, this overtly cool indie-flick tale follows Frances and her best friend Sophie. When the latter moves out of their shared apartment to live with another friend, Frances is forced to figure her life out.

There's shades of Greenberg here, though whereas Ben Stiller was the focus in that movie (despite Gerwig stealing every scene), it is the 28-year-old from New York who maintains her position as one of the world's finest actresses.

Frances Ha Trailer

Frances Handley is a 27-year-old aspiring modern dancer and an apprentice for a dance company, though she has no real talent in the art. She lives in an apartment in New York with her best friend Sophie who is smarter and much more mature with an ambition in publishing. As time goes on, their bond begins to weaken as their lives take different courses and their personalities take different courses. Sophie wants to move out with another friend of hers leaving Frances to work out her own life and take care of herself for once in her life. Will this pair be separated forever by romance, ambition and growing older, or will they find it in themselves to reconcile?

'Frances Ha' is a black and white comedy drama with many similar qualities to a rom com, except platonic. It has been directed by Noah Baumbach ('The Squid and the Whale', 'Greenberg') who also co-wrote the screenplay with the movie's star Greta Gerwig ('Hannah Takes the Stairs', 'Nights and Weekends'). It looks at love in a way that is rarely explored in movies these days and has so far received immense reviews since its premiere at Toronto Film Festival. It is set to hit screens on July 26th 2013.

Release date 26th July 2013

Amanda Seyfried Wants Her 'Beautiful, Huge Breasts' Back!

Amanda Seyfried Juno Temple Ellen Degeneres Noah Baumbach Adam Driver Ben Stiller Greta Gerwig Naomi Watts James Franco Peter Sarsgaard

Les Miserables actress Amanda Seyfried says she lost her "beautiful, huge breasts" after moving to Hollywood to pursue a career in movies. The 27-year-old - who plays Linda Lovelace in a forthcoming biopic - called in on the Ellen Degeneres show this week to discuss her beginnings.

"I looked way better when I was 15. I had beautiful, huge breasts!" the actress explained, "And then I came to Hollywood and I was like I gotta lose weight. I gotta look thin. I gotta get fit. And I lost them a little bit." It seems she lost more than "a little bit," telling DeGeneres she was an D cup though that she doesn't miss them, "...because they were ... uncomfortable."

Despite her own decisions, Seyfried warned, "I was feminine. I had some nice curves. And I think we should appreciate that instead of trying to get rid of everything."

Is Noah Baumbach's 'Frances Ha' The New 'Annie Hall'?

Greta Gerwig Noah Baumbach Ben Stiller Woody Allen

Frances Ha, the new movie starring Greta Gerwig as an apprentice dancer in New York, has been critically acclaimed ahead of its release this week. The movie, by Noah Baumbach (Squid And The Whale, Margot At The Wedding), follows a young woman named Frances who lives with her best friends Sophie, until she moves out to live with another pal.

Gerwig and Baumbach first collaborated in 2010's Greenberg, starring Ben Stiller, though decided to work together again and began exchanging ideas which ultimately became the co-written script for Frances Ha. The movie is shot in black-and-white to emulate parts in Woody Allen's Manhattan (1979) and the movie is gaining comparisons to the director's most famous work, Annie Hall (1977). The film boasts a 92% score on reviews aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes (Star Trek Into Darkness 81%, Iron Man 78%) and critics have been unanimous in their praise. "An American independent film (shot in luminous black and white by Sam Levy) that feels off the cuff but is in fact exactly made by a filmmaker in total control of his resources," said Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal said, "Perhaps Ms. Gerwig is the greatest actress alive. And maybe "Frances Ha" is just the ghost orchid of independent cinema."

To Rome With Love Review

Very Good
After Midnight in Paris, Woody Allen remains in a cheery European mode for another breezy comedy tinged with magical realism. This one's actually four separate stories that are very loosely interwoven as people struggle with the unpredictability of romance and fame. And like Midnight in Paris, it shows off Rome in the most beautiful light imaginable.

Baldwin plays an architect who returns to his student stomping grounds and meets Jack (Eisenberg), who seems to be living his old life, even as he falls for a friend (Page) of his girlfriend (Gerwig). Meanwhile, there's Leopoldo (Benigni), a dull businessman who suddenly becomes a celebrity for no reason he can see, is pursued everywhere by the paparazzi and starts to enjoy the high life. Across town, Jerry and Phyllis (Allen and Davis) arrive to meet the fiance (Parenti) of their daughter (Pill). Then Jerry pushes a future in-law (Armiliato) into becoming the latest opera sensation. Finally, a young couple arrives from the country to start a new life in the city, but the husband (Tiberi) ends up having a farcical day out with a sexy prostitute (Cruz) while the wife (Mastronardi) meets her favourite actor (Albanese).

Damsels In Distress Review

Very Good
Funny, fizzy and packed with astute observations, this endearing film can't help but make us smile. It's perhaps overly mannered and obtuse, but anyone looking for originality in the cinema won't be able to resist it.

Lily (Tipton) transfers to a rather pathetic New England university, where she's immediately adopted by the obsessive-compulsive Violet (Gerwig) who, with cohorts Rose and Heather (Echikunwoke and MacLemore), runs a centre for the rather large number of suicidal students. Lily starts dating two guys - charmer Charlie (Brody) and seducer Xavier (Becker) - just as Violet catches her dim-bulb boyfriend Frank (Metcalfe) snogging one of the depressed girls (Fitzgerald). And things start to get increasingly complicated for everyone.

To Rome With Love Trailer

Woody Allen takes us on a romp around yet another beautiful European city with his latest film To Rome With Love. Set in one of the most beautiful and romantic cites in the world (unsurprisingly) Rome, the film is broken down into four parts and the tale follows the escapades and relationships of holiday makers and local residents alike, each story individually unravels and gives us a glimpse into their -generally complicated & quirky- lives.

Video - Whit Stillman And Greta Gerwig Talk Suicide And Depression - Damsels In Distress Press Junket Part 2

Whit Stillman and Greta Gerwig, the director and star of the upcoming Damsels In Distress respectively, discuss their own college days, the two key themes of the film - suicide and depression and what's next for the two now that filming has finished.

Despite it's dark subject matter the film has already been lauded by critics for the use of humour inherent within the film as well as the innocence and realism felt by the cast. Released later this month, the film also stars Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Carrie MacLemore, Hugo Becker and Ryan Metcalf

Violet and her friends, Heather and Rose, are students at the formerly all-male Seven Oaks University. Their mission, while they are students there, is to rid the campus of the 'male barbarism' that is still around. They also run the suicide prevention centre, where they help depressed students with the aid of donuts and tap dancing.
