Backdraft Review


Good
I got in enough trouble as a kid to learn firsthand that fire is cool.

That said, even the wicked fire shots of Backdraft -- which feature rising towers of flame, backwards-flowing fire, and blankets of flame that slowly ripple across the floor -- are barely able to distract you from the ultimately tiresome family drama that makes up the bulk of Ron Howard's firehouse epic.

Huh? We've got vengeful angels, we've got a soul hidden in the body of a little girl, we've got Virginia Madsen as a brunette. We've got a plot that's hopelessly confusing and dully simple at the same time. We've got bad dialogue and sleep-inducing momentum -- and this is an action film. Naturally, what else did we get? Sequels.

Extraordinary
One of my all-time favorite guilty pleasures, The Highlander has no equal among sword-and-sorcery flicks. Emphasis on the sword.

From an engimatic Sean Connery to the pulsating Queen soundtrack, the movie has all you could want from an action flick. The flashbacks, the swordfights, "There can be only one," ... gosh, just thinking about The Highlander makes me want to track down some immortals and decapitate them.
