Wolfen Review

Good
Check out Diane Venora, before she got weird and scary looking like Jessica Lange. Wolfen offers an interesting spin on the werewolf movie (these ones have ESP and can (perhaps) shapeshift at will), but it's got one too many negativized tracking shots and a few too many male frontal nudity glimpses to merit classic status. Albert Finney is exceptional, though, as a NYC detective who doesn't believe any of it and who desperately needs a haircut. Falls apart, alas, in the end.

Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her Review

Good
What happens when you put big stars Glenn Close, Cameron Diaz, Calista Flockhart, Amy Brenneman, and Holly Hunter in a movie together? You go straight to cable, that's what happens. This practically Made for Lifetime feature tells five vaguely interlocking stories about women at crossroads in their lives. One is pregnant and doesn't want the child. One is a lesbian with a dying lover. One is infatuated with the dwarf who lives across the street. You know, your ordinary middle America stuff.

Why didn't this movie find more success? I dunno, maybe it has something to do with the fact that there are two scenes of women sitting on the toilet in the first 20 minutes. Or it could be that it's too chatty, too meandering, and too random to ever really engage the viewer. Whatever, I still don't know what I'm supposed to be able to tell, you know, just by looking at her.

The Tic Code Review

Good
Curious little film tells us about a young piano virtuoso named Miles (Chris Marquette) who is stricken with a nervous tic that turns out to be Tourrette's Syndrome. He loves jazz, and soon enough he's playing at the local nightclub, despite his age, and here he meets a kindred spirit in Gregory Hines's Tyrone, also a jazz pianist and also suffering from the same problem. And wouldn't you know it, mom needs a little affection too. Cute and sometimes touching, but it's hardly a total success. Written by Polly Draper, who stars as the mom.

The Cotton Club Review

Good
Gangsters, tap dancers, and jazz musicians collide, in Francis Coppola's rather maligned tale of the famed Harlem jazz club during the Prohibition era.

Starring Richard Gere as a cornet player-cum-movie star (Gere even plays his own solos in the film) and Diane Lane as a kind of singer/hooker/kept woman, the film gets off to a wild start, throwing us into Coppola's archetypal world of violence and betrayal. Gere and Lane have an uneasy romance, the problem being they are low on the totem and the gangsters who control them wouldn't care for any such hanky-panky.
