Green Day promise their 'American Idiot' musical will "move" its audience.

The US rock group said although the stage is not the usual medium they would use to convey their story, they feel their new production - based around their 2004 album 'American Idiot' - will come to life in the theatres when it begins its run in New York today (20.04.10)

Bassist Mike Dirnt said: "You know, it is real life. There is a saying that if theatre is life and movies are entertainment, then television is furniture."

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong added: "It's going to move you. I think it's the same reason why you would want to go see a band play live, you know?

"It's a record that's coming to life, it's in your face, and it's a story. You're seeing a good movie.

"That's what 'American Idiot' does. That's what it does in the music, and that's what it's going to do onstage."

Billie Joe also added he loves watching the production, and said it's not so far removed from one of the band's shows.

He added: "Having a chorus of people sing a Green Day song isn't unlike what you'd experience at one of our concerts. At the same time, this is a theatre piece that takes you on a complete journey with these characters. That's why I love watching it over and over again."
