American acts are leading the way at tonight's (03NOV05) MTV Europe Music Awards in Portugal, with Green Day, THE Black Eyed Peas and Snoop Dogg claiming early trophies.

The star-studded show in Lisbon was opened with an energetic performance from MADONNA singing HUNG UP, the first single from her new album CONFESSIONS ON A DANCEFLOOR.

Punk trio GREEN DAY with the first winners of the night, picking up both Best Rock and Best Album for AMERICAN IDIOT, followed by THE BLACK EYED PEAS winning Best Pop.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong led the crowd in soccer chant 'Olay, olay, olay' as they collected their Best Rock accolade, declaring, "This is for kick a*s rock 'n' roll music forever."

Rapper SNOOP DOGG was unable to accept the Best Hip-Hop gong in person, but thanked his European fans via a videotaped message.

Tonight's show is being hosted by ALI G comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakhstani alter ego Borat SAGDIYEV, who invited a dance troupe from his homeland to entertain the crowds as they awaited the arrival of pop newcomers THE PUSSYCATS DOLLS, who sang their hit single DON'T CHA.
