Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has blasted musicians who keep quiet about their political beliefs to protect their record sales.

The 32-year-old singer, whose latest Green Day album AMERICAN IDIOT criticises US President George W Bush, is amazed so few bands are prepared to stand up for what they believe in.

Armstrong says, "I'm surprised that more hard rock bands haven't got more outspoken. I mean, I learnt so much through music, a lot more than I have through school.

"I think the problem with a lot of rock bands or pop groups or whatever is that they're so afraid of damaging their precious careers.

"For me, I think it is something that can enrich mine: 'Yeah, I supported this. It meant a lot to me.'"
