Guardians of the Galaxy, the latest film based on Marvel’s comic books, is due to be released in July. With fans already speculating about the film’s plotline and special effects, the cast and crew were happy to chime in with a special Q&A session on Facebook on Monday (19th May). The session followed the release of the film’s second trailer, following the shorter teaser trailer we saw back in January.

Guardians of the Galaxy follows Peter Quill, an American pilot, as he journeys through space after coming into possession of a desirable orb with immense power. The villainous Ronan, true to superhero lore, longs to possess the orb attempts to hunt Quill down. An all-star cast ensures this film will not simply remain a sci-fi cult hit but is likely to reach vast audiences. Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) stars as Quill whilst Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) plays Ronan.

They’re supported by a variety of well-known names and faces including: Zoe Saldana (Star Trek), Karen Gillan (Doctor Who), Dave Bautista (The Man with the Iron Fists), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Vin Diesel (Fast and Furious), Benicio Del Toro (The Wolfman), Glenn Close (Damages) and John C. Reilly (Chicago). The Q&A session featured actors Pratt, Gillan and Diesel whilst writer and director James Gunn also featured.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Vin Diesel voices Groot, a tree like creature in GoG.

Vin Diesel provides the voice of Groot, a feisty Ent like creature, and he spoke candidly about how his character helped him overcome the loss of his close friend and Fast and Furious co-star, Paul Walker. As Yahoo reports, one fan asked Diesel what the most challenging aspect of getting into his character was. Diesel stated the role was a “very personal one” as it was such a short time after the loss of Walker. He wrote “It was the month after the accident happened with my brother Paul Walker and it was the first time I had worked since. Although it was challenging, just to get back to work was therapeutic, especially as Groot."

Groot seems to be a favourite amongst the cast who all commented on the tree-like creature at least once during the Q&A. One fan asked what the most beautiful scene in the film was to which Gunn replied “I don’t want to give it away, but it’s with Groot. Hooray for our visual effects team!” Whilst when asked who they’d rather take into a fight both Bautista and Gunn immediately opted for Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy is released in cinemas in the UK on 21st July 2014 and in the US on 1st August.
