Women In Love Review

OK
Ken Russell's Women in Love is alternately heralded and dismissed by viewers. I stand somewhere in the middle: It's a definite mess, though the titular women out-act the men they're ostensibly in love with. Russell's at his pervy best here (and Glenda Jackson was the first actress to win an Oscar in a movie featuring a nude scene; in this case her own plus a notorious all-male, all-nude, fireside wrestling sequence), and his interpretation of D.H. Lawrence's book is on the liberal side. But ultimately the film is so confusing and meandering that its perversity is shuffled under the rug of its own pretensions. Still, it's memorable for both its era-specific shock value and for Jackson's alternately sweet and vicious performance.

The Music Lovers Review

Good
If you like Tchaikovsky, now's your chance to see him do just about everything except compose music. Through the twin filters of Ken Russell and the year 1970, The Music Lovers is a smashmouth look at Tchaikovsky's (Richard Chamberlain) life and loves and, in keeping with the filmed story of most composers, his descent into gibbering madness. Swan Lake it ain't, unless that lake was filled with blood and on fire.

A Touch Of Class Review

Good
George Segal steals the show (as usual) in this romantic comedy, but it's Glenda Jackson who won the Oscar for A Touch of Class. Her stuffy and dour character (as usual) isn't really anything special -- she's the straight man to Segal's hambone, a married man who's desperately trying to get the British Jackson into bed, despite his old age (back spasms, and so on). A Touch of Class tries to turn infidelity into comedy gold, as many of its 1970s compatriots also did, victims of the sexual revolution. Too bad that today, the film is dated, relying too much on slapstick humor and saddled with now-stale gags. Hilarious for its time? (Hilarious enough for a Best Picture nomination?) You be the judge.

Marat/Sade Review

Good
Whether it's based on reality or not, Marat/Sade is an ambitious idea. The Marquis de Sade (Patrick Magee), often wrote and produced plays during his incarceration. Whether he made one about Jean-Paul Marat is debatable and this is certainly not based on anything Sade wrote.

Marat/Sade is actually a filmed version of a play written in the early 1960s (and fully titled The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat As Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of The Marquis de Sade) by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Ian Richardson plays the bathtub-bound Marat, and Glenda Jackson plays his assassin. The only problem, of course, is that in the world of the film, Richardson is a lunatic paranoid and Jackson is a narcoleptic depressive. This makes for some strange interpretations of history, mental illness, heroism, and politics -- and where we draw the lines among all these things.

Hopscotch Review

Good
Often touted as one of the great cat-and-mouse games in movie history, Hopscotch's antics just don't stand up to some of its more expertly crafted contemporaries. Walter Matthau is unforgettable as an ex-CIA agent who's so bored he decides to write a tell-all memoir about his experiences as a spy. This sits poorly with his former bosses, who immediately plot to have him killed. Naturally, he outsmarts them at every turn, but the depth of "clever" twists never rises above identity changes and leaving tape recorders in hotel rooms he's just left. Overrated, unfortunately.
