Sheffield-based five-piece Gledhill release a new single, 'Roots', on May 1st. The follow-up to the acclaimed debut single 'Remain' is a soaring paean to their hometown:
"Roots is a song for everybody who has somewhere they can call home," says lead singer David Gledhill. "It's about that warm feeling you get in your stomach when the last train rolls into your station and you know you're home. It's about the places we grew up. It's about the places we fell in love. It's about where we go when we can't take any more. I guess it's about belonging."
Gledhill, who formed in 2004, comprise David Gledhill (vocalist & rhythm guitar), Tom Jarvis (lead guitar), Julian Gallagher (bass guitar), Tracey Wilkinson (keyboards & backing vocals) and Lliam Oliver (drums).
Gledhill have one small goal: "to write the biggest, most uplifting, epic songs that man has ever heard." And indeed it wasn't long before Simon Williams' highly influential label Fierce Panda gave them their big break after hearing a demo played on Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. Witnessing their live show at Club Fandango shortly afterwards, Williams put out 'Resurrect Me' – the most expensive Fierce Panda single ever.
A further industry supporter came in the shape of Owen Morris (Oasis), who was so impressed with their demo that he drove six hours to see them in Sheffield. In addition to the last single 'Remain' (which won them a '4 Play' slot on Channel 4), Owen has recently just finished producing their debut album at the Chapel in Lincolnshire.
