China Issues Warning To Glastonbury Festival Over Dalai Lama

Michael Eavis Glastonbury Festival

China has issued a warning to the Glastonbury Festival organisers over their booking of the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan spiritual leader is to give a talk at this weekend's festival to promote a message of "compassion, non-violence and the oneness of humanity."

Dalai LamaDalai Lama's booking at the Glastonbury Festival has caused a stir in China

However, officials in China have warned that the Eavises' booking is tantamount to offering the Dalai Lama a platform to "engage in anti-China splittist activities," Reuters reports. The leader is not scheduled to meet with officials in Britain, though China nevertheless is concerned that he may be intent on promoting his wish for an autonomous Tibet in the UK.

Glastonbury May Have To Move Site In The Future, Says Michael Eavis

Glastonbury Festival Michael Eavis

Glastonbury has become one of the key dates in Britain’s social calendar over the last ten years, but a major shake-up of the festival could be on the horizon. Michael Eavis, the founder and organiser of the annual musical celebration, has admitted that it may have to move location in the future.

With just a week to go until the 2015 edition, which will see headline performances by Florence + The Machine, Kanye West and The Who, 79 year old Eavis told Sky News on Friday (June 19th) that he does not own the entire site and, as a result, is finding it increasingly difficult to get the requisite commissions to stage the event each year.

It’s the news that many Glastonbury goers have been dreading: Foo Fighters have indeed cancelled their Friday night headline appearance at the festival later this month, in addition to their two massive Wembley gigs this weekend and Murrayfield Stadium gig, because of Dave Grohl’s leg break earlier in June.

A statement from the band on Tuesday afternoon read: “Due to injuries sustained in Dave Grohl's fall from the stage during Foo Fighters' June 12 show at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, doctors have required the cancellation of the remainder of the band's dates in the UK and Europe. After undergoing surgery Monday, Dave's full recuperation time is still to be determined.”

With a little under a month to go before it kicks off, probably the most talked-about thing about Glastonbury 2015 has been the booking of Kanye West for the Saturday night headline slot. Speaking with The Times, Eavis, 36, who runs the festival with her father Michael, stood proudly by their decision to book the rapper to headline the Pyramid Stage, but said that some of the abuse they’ve received has been “just horrible”.

Stephen Hawking To Appear At Glastonbury

Stephen Hawking Glastonbury Festival Dynamo

Glastonbury is famous for very many things – stone circles, crusty hippies and loud music – but almost certainly not for science. However, a reputation for serious thought might start developing with the news that Stephen Hawking is to make an appearance at this year’s festival.

Glasto’s official Twitter account confirmed that the world-renowned professor, whose life was recently the subject of the Oscar-winning movie The Theory of Everything, will be appearing at the Kidz Field. He’ll be part of the 21st anniversary celebrations of the creation of that area of the festival, which is aimed at children aged 12 or under.

The NME reported that Eavis was speaking at an event at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum on Tuesday evening (April 21st), describing the history of the prestigious festival. It was when he was talking to attendees and posing for pictures afterwards that he made the revelation – adding that the artist would be a “big one”.

Q.1) Did Dolly Parton Mime At Glastonbury? Q.2) Should We Care?

Dolly Parton Glastonbury Festival

Dolly Parton has been hit with accusations that she mimed songs during her Glastonbury Festival performance last weekend. The 68 year-old country and western star topped off her recent UK tour to promote her new album, Blue Smoke, with a long-awaited appearance on the Pyramid Stage at the Somerset site.

However, her performance has drawn criticism from many who believe that the singer mouthed the words to a pre-recorded track onstage instead of singing live. In the face of the scrutiny, Parton's spokesman has responded with an outright denial: "No, she sings live," he told the Sunday Mirror. "Some people don't know an amazing singer when they hear one."

It was Kay Burley of Sky News who first decided to air her views regarding Dolly's perceived miming. "Oh, Dolly is miming. How disappointing," she tweeted, ahead of a string of similar sentiments from users of the social site. However, TV host Stephen Fry jumped to Parton's defence, blaming television-related delays for making it look like Dolly's sound wasn't synched.

Festivalgoers Should Embrace The Rain As Glastonbury Weather Forecast Is Grim

With the Glastonbury 2014 weather forecast predicating a rain-soaked festival, ticketholders should stock up on towels, pack those wellys and embrace what is sure to be a muddy ol’ time.

Glastonbury mudIt probably won't be this muddy, but we're suggesting you prepare for the worst...

In fact, the only thing predictable about this weekend’s weather forecast in the South West of England, where the legendary festival takes places, is its unpredictability. Expect dramatic changes of temperature, cloudbursts of rain and even blazing sunshine. The order of which: anyone’s guess.

Part of Glastonbury’s enduring reputation is its propensity for composing a line-up that is extensive that a wealth of acts will pass by unnoticed. We’ve sieved through the thousands of acts who will be making the trip to Worthy Farm to highlight ten acts whose inclusion in the festival bill may surprise many. Sifting through the lower rungs of the bill uncovers a slew of rising stars and forgotten flames, those who are on the ascension to the upper levels of cultural recognition as well as those whose days of glory are far behind them.

Beyond the endless stretch of humans eyeing up the pyramid stage with binoculars are copious tents and smaller stages which host a myriad of curiosities, from fading pop stars regurgitating their hit songs for the umpteenth time to all manner of odd theatrics, spoken word performances, comedians, circus performances and Happy Monday’s hype-man Bez, who has this year been granted his very own ‘Acid House’ stage. Here then, are ten acts who to varying degrees will surprise festival goers with their very presence at the culturally sacred Somerset site:

Billy Bragg Likens Kasabian's Swagger To Spinal Tap's Satire

Billy Bragg Kasabian Glastonbury Festival

Kasabian were the subject of derision when they chose to divulge the lyrics, "Horsemeat in the burgers, people commit murders, everyone’s on bugle, we’re being watched by Google" early. They eventually revised those lyrics for their current single, ‘Eez-eh’, but Billy Brag still thinks they’re the Spinal Tap of modern music.

"They have an important role to play: they are there to remind us how true Spinal Tap was. I'm not a fan, but if you read their interviews as if it was dialogue from Spinal Tap, it's very entertaining," says Bragg. Only trouble is, high-maintenance lead-singer Serge isn’t really going for satire; he’s genuinely making what he believes to be a comment on the socio-political state of the United Kingdom.
