THE MARVELETTES singer Gladys Horton has died, aged 66.
The Motown hitmaker passed away on Wednesday night (26Jan11) at a nursing home in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, where she had been recovering from a stroke.
Horton formed the all-girl vocal group as a teenager when she entered a school talent competition and went on to audition for Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson.
The band then rose to fame with their 1961 hit Please Mr. Postman and later recorded tracks by accomplished writers including Brian Holland and Marvin Gaye.
Horton left The Marvelettes in 1967 to get married. She occasionally performed as 'Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes', but semi-retired from showbusiness to care for her handicapped son.
