13 Ghosts Review

OK
I swear Joel Silver and the boys at Dark Castle just keep making the same damn film in a nicer looking house. I can picture the gray-bearded man right now, sitting behind a desk in a plush leather chair, tapping his fingers together, trying to decide at which overtly posh location he shall strike next. The House on Notting Hill is surely on the way next.

Once again deciding to rely entirely on creepy art direction, set design, and half-assed CGI, Silver is back again at the whole "haunted house" game. Last time he handed up a haunted insane asylum (House on Haunted Hill) and a group of under- or overrated actors and said "boo." This time he hands us Shannon Elizabeth, Tony Shalhoub, Matthew Lillard, F. Murray Abraham, all sequestered in a glass house with Latin written across its walls -- oh yeah, and let's not forget the comic relief nanny (Rah Digga).

The House On Haunted Hill (1999) Review

Terrible
Every so often, most recently with Scream, a film will briefly try to make the horror genre something it's not --- like creative, entertaining, cool, or self-aware. But The House on Haunted Hill is not one of those films.

Instead, it's pretty much a copy of all the other haunted-house horror movies that have run briefly in theaters over the years (and then run on cable channels indefinitely, giving teenagers something to stare at for a minute or two before leaving the house or switching channels). I understand that the beast of cable programming must be fed, but I still don't understand why directors are still making new movies like this, given the thousands that have already been made. Why don't the cable channels just run old ones from the late 1980s that nobody remembers?

Demon Knight Review

Weak
Appallingly straightforward horror fare from the Tales from the Crypt fellows gives us a men vs. demon routine as Billy Zane's "Collector" attempts to retrieve an ancient relic from Sadler's man on the run. He holes up in an old church and the siege begins, as Zane summons a load of demons to help out in the fight. Borrowed pretty much wholesale from Rio Bravo and Assault on Precinct 13.

Bordello Of Blood Review

OK
In this Tales from the Crypt Presents... story, we get one highlight: Angie Everheart as a hot-as-hell vampiress running a whorehouse. Dennis Miller's wisecracking P.I. (in search of an Everheart-captured Corey Feldman(!), playing the brother of Erika Eleniak(!!)) makes for a reasonably amusing diversion from an otherwise run-of-the-mill horror movie. Chris Sarandon's guitar-playing preacher is a tad over the top, but in line with the Fright Night version of his persona.
