Saturn In Opposition Review

Good
Italians have the nicest kitchens, and we get to ogle several of them in Saturn in Opposition, a crowded and talky drama centering around the reaction of a large group of friends to the sudden death of the brightest light of the group, the charismatic man who brought them all together in the first place. Come to think of it, what we have here is an upscale and literate Italian Big Chill.

It's 30-year-old Lorenzo (Luca Argentero) and his lover Davide (Pierfrancesco Favino) who attract friends to their dinner parties. Troubled married couple Antonio (Stefano Accorsi) and Angelica (Margherita Buy) are regulars, as are Davide's ex Sergio (Ennio Fantastichini), drug-addled Roberta (Ambra Angiolini), and, most memorably Neval (Serra Yilmaz), a short and fat truth teller who busts through the rest of the group's fibs and vague comments with cutting remarks. She's the one who can be counted on to keep things somewhat lively.

Cemetary Man Review

Very Good
Michele Soavi is, unapologetically, a student of the Mario Bava school of splatter filmmaking. He's also taken electives from Sam Raimi, it seems. Cemetary Man is an Evil Dead redux, a blend of zombie gore, sex scenes, and tongue-in-cheek comedy.

The similarities to Evil Dead are uncanny. Even Rupert Everett looks a lot like Bruce Campbell, strutting around a cemetary with various firearms as he puts the dead to rest when they invariably rise as zombies, for reasons that remain largely unexplained. When he's not capping zombies, Francesco's busy hustling widows, few of whom have any problem getting naked in the moonlight and balling atop a mausoleum. With his sidekick Gnaghi (François Hadji-Lazaro), Francesco tirelessly works to bury the dead by day, then bury them again by night when they won't stay down.

Facing Windows Review

Good
Director and screenwriter Ferzan Ozpetek's latest movie Facing Windows begins like a Hitchcock thriller. 1943 in Nazi occupied Italy. Late one night a young man commits murder, runs off into the wet and shadowy back alleys, and mysteriously disappears forever.

In sudden counterpoint to this fear and tension from the past come the modern strains of a couple arguing about kids and money. Giovanna (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) hates her job as a bookkeeper in a chicken factory and husband Filippo (Filippo Nigro) can't seem to hold a job and is too dependent on her. She wants more from him than he seems able to give.
