Gerard Butler is in talks to star in a 'Point Break' remake.

The 'Olympus Has Fallen' actor has entered final negotiations for the lead role in Ericson Core's new take on the classic '90s surf film, which originally starred the late Patrick Swayze.

'Daredevil' helmer Core has enlisted Kurt Wimmer to write the script, which has been adapted to be set in the world of extreme sports rather than the Californian surf scene, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Action flick regular Butler is due to star as Bodhi, an expert extreme-sports athlete by day, and crime ring leader by night.

He accidentally brings undercover FBI agent, Johnny Utah, into the fold of his Dead Presidents gang, named on account of the rubber masks they wear during hold-ups. The role of Utah is yet to be cast.

Broderick Johnson, Andrew Kosove, Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi and Chris Taylor will produce alongside Wimmer.

The original 1991 film was directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow and also starred Keanu Reeves.

Butler has a big year coming up and is first scheduled to film epic adventure 'Gods of Egypt' in March before shooting 'London Has Fallen', the sequel to 'Olympus Has Fallen'.
