US President George W Bush and his wife Laura have honoured Elvis Presley with an emotional open letter today (16AUG06) to mark the 29th anniversary of the rocker's death. The President and the First Lady sent the tribute to be read by thousands of fans keeping vigil outside the late singer's Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee. The White House missive reads, "We were reminded that Elvis Presley will forever have a special place in the cultural life of America. "This event is an opportunity for people from around the globe to come together, share their memories and celebrate one of America's most beloved icons." Presley died of heart disease at Graceland on 16 August 1977.
