Detective Story Review

Good
It's just another day at the precinct for Jim McLeod (Kirk Douglas)... well, that's what we're supposed to think anyway.

Detective Story takes place almost entirely within a detective squad room of a police station. Originally a play, the film focuses on the dramas -- large and small -- that go on during this fateful day. A woman (Lee Grant) is hauled in for shoplifting. She spends the entire day just sitting there, waiting. Another man is brought in for stealing from his boss in order to fund his girlfriend's expensive tastes, while her sister begs for the cops to let him go. Two burglars are given the shakedown. And, in what drives the film's most critical plot forward, McLeod spars continuously with a suspicious doctor for reasons unknown. When McLoed's wife (Eleanor Parker) shows up, it'll come to a head.

Gilda Review

Very Good
The definitive Rita Hayworth vehicle is this film, Gilda, her most famous film, shot when her career was beginning to slow down. Whether dancing, singing, or tempting a pair of men in an Argentine casino, Hayworth is a burning presence in ever scene -- every scene she's in, anyway. Hayworth is absent for the first 22 minutes of the movie, during which Charles Vidor sets up a plot about a troublesome gambler (Glenn Ford) who later enters into Gilda and her rich husband's life. Oh, and they have a past together, too. I could forget Ford, but Hawyworth deserves all the attention she gets throughout the film.

Paths Of Glory Review

Essential
Brilliant study into the nature of cowardice and the pathetic nature of the modern (well, in 1957) military machine. Vehemently anti-war, Kubrick takes us on a this-can't-be-happening ride, as French soldiers fail in their mission to take a certain hill from the enemy. A court martial ensues, with devastating results.
