"Spin Off, I Shall Have", Star Wars Character Spin-Offs Confirmed Alongside New Trilogy
Disney bosses have confirmed that the upcoming Star Wars trilogy, Episodes VII, VII and IX, will not be the only films attached to the franchise to be released by the company, with individual spin-off charting the back story of some of the most famous characters in the film series also in the pipeline.
Disney's CEO Bob Iger told CNBC that the company has decided to make several other extra films based on the "great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga" and will be released over the same six year period as the new films too, with Episode VII slated for a 2015 release. Iger also revealed that Disney have decided on a writing team for these standalone films, with Larry Kasdan (who wrote the screenplay for Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand and Sherlock Holmes) signed on to write a back story for some of the franchise's most revered characters.
Nothing has been confirmed in regards to who these spin-offs will centre on, but rumors that Yoda and Boba Fett are at the top of the list are circling forums and blogs at the moment. A JarJar Binks spin-off might also be on the cards too, but only if Disney want to alienate Star Wars fans even more.
This might not be it for Star Wars news though, as George Lucas had initially stated his plans to re-release the whole franchise in 3D, prior to him selling Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion. Since the purchase, Disney have reiterated that they are only planning on making new films attached to the franchise for now, but will announce any 3D release plans "at a later date".
