A typically wise-cracking George Clooney entertained the star studded audience at the Golden Globes after taking to the podium to collect the gong for Best Actor in a Drama on Sunday (15 January 2012). Clooney, 50, was the hot favorite to land the honor for his role as land baron Matt King in Alexander Payne's The Descendants.
After being announced as the winner, the actor kissed his girlfriend Stacy Kiebler and made his way up on stage, but used Brad Pitt's cane to climb the stairs. Pitt - who was nominated for his turn in baseball flick Moneyball - injured his leg a couple of weeks ago and has been walking with the aid of the cane since. After finally making it up onstage, George joked, "I have to give it back to him (Pitt) ... He can't make it to the bar otherwise" - his close friend laughed and nodded his approval. Clooney had fended off stiff competition to land the award for Best Actor, beating Pitt as well as Leonardo Dicaprio, who was nominated for J Edgar, and Ryan Gosling for The Ides of March. Later in his acceptance speech, he again turned the spotlight on Brad Pitt and praised his work over the past year, saying, "I wanted to say it's nice to see Brad, and it's nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he's doing in two films this year. But what wonderful work he does in the rest of the world to the rest of the people". Though the actor is now tipped to land Best Actor at the Oscars in February, he will have to contend with the threat of The Artist star Jean Dujardin, who found himself in the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy category at the Globes.
This year's ceremony, again hosted by the British comedian Ricky Gervais, also saw wins for Martin Scorsese, Octavia Spencer and MERYL STREEP.
