Australian actor Geoffrey Rush is set to star in a new Hollywood epic about the life of Danish fairytale writer HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN.

The biopic of the author, best known for children's tale HANSEL AND GRETEL, will be directed OSCAR-winning Danish film-maker Bille August, who is currently putting the finishing touches to his script.

CHRISTIAN HAVE, boss of the Danish body organising the celebrations surrounding the 200th anniversary of the writer's birthday (02APR05), says, ''Geoffrey Rush has shown a strong interest in this project, that much I can reveal.'"

On Monday (07MAR05), Denmark's CROWN PRINCE FREDERIK appointed SHINE star Rush an Andersen ambassador during his visit to Sydney, Australia.

During the ceremony at the Sydney Opera House, Rush read Andersen story THE LITTLE MATCHGIRL.

The new biopic will be the second movie about the world-renowned author. The first, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, was made by director Charles Vidor in 1952 and starred Danny Kaye.
