Why 'Game Of Thrones' Has Made Lena Headey Such An Important Role Model

Lena Headey Game Of Thrones

Lena Headey has become quite the feminist figure in Hollywood, whether she intended to or not. Her strong characters, including the evil but powerful Cersei Lannister in 'Game Of Thrones', coupled with her tenacious personality have made her a massive role model for young female actors - and, indeed, young girls all round.

Unfortunately, it is still a fact in this day and age that many emerging actresses are forced to get their roles not through their natural talent, but through using their sexuality to essentially pay for it. 43-year-old Lena Headey reveals how that's something that she never wanted to do, even if it meant losing out on roles. She wanted to change this 'boys club' theme from the beginning.

Jessica Henwick Game Of Thrones

'Game Of Thrones' fans have had quite the wait for the series' seventh season, with the debut episode pushed back around two months later than the show would usually premiere. With just seven episodes making up season 7 as opposed to the 10 episodes that have made up the six seasons to-date, those working on the show will have had to refine their vision. Having had more time to do so than in the past however, there's a lot of growing expectation for this coming batch of new episodes.

'Game Of Thrones' fans have gotten to experience a wonderful taste of irony with a viral video featuring the cast 'singing' along to Gloria Gaynor's 1978 hit 'I Will Survive'. It must've have taken some 'GoT' lover a long time to put together but it's so worth it.

So far the gritty fantasy show in its 6 seasons has killed off more than 100 characters, so it seems fabulously appropriate to have the cast's lines dubbed to the tune of the number one diva classic. The video merges together various clips and soundbites from the show so that it appears they are speaking the lyrics to 'I Will Survive'.

Lena Headey Employed Body Double For Cersei’s Walk Of Atonement In 'Game Of Thrones'

Lena Headey Game Of Thrones

Lena Headey employed a body double for a scene in the finale of Game Of Thrones season 5. Headey’s character Cersei Lannister had to complete a walk of atonement through King’s Landing from her prison at the High Septon to the Red Keep. Surrounded by her social inferiors, Cersei was sworn at and covered in a number of unpleasant fluids (we’ll let you draw your own conclusions as to what they were). For Cersei, who is notoriously proud, it was a serious fall from grace and one she will not forget any time soon. Roll on the wave of revenge in season 6!

While there were plenty of twists and turns this season (in addition to boat rides), these are our top five:

Kit Harrington's Jon Snow seems to have bitten the dustKit Harington's Jon Snow seems to have bitten the dust

Cersei's Arrest: Lena Headey has put in a great performance from the start, making the incestuous, alcoholic and power-hungry Cersei Lannister both a compelling and hated character since the show's first episode. HBO's 'Game Of Thrones' has been getting a lot of criticism this year for it's massively dramatic departures from the book series 'A Song of Ice and Fire', upon which the show is based. While series creator George R. R. Martin stated on his official blog "there has seldom been any TV series as faithful to its source material" and reiterated how the show and the books are entirely separate stories, albeit with the same intended ending.

That still doesn't excuse the sudden, unexpected (and rather brutal execution) of a young girl, in Sunday night's infamous Episode Nine 'The Dance of Dragons'. Written by show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the episode saw Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) hounded by Ramsey Bolton's (Iwan Rheon) guerrilla tactics, and offering his daughter Shireen (Kerry Ingram) to the priestess Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) as a sacrifice. Said sacrifice involved burning her alive to appease the Red God, with the hopes of turning their luck and winning him the Iron Throne once and for all.
