A Week In Movies: Blockbusters Bombard Cinemas, Tom And Emily Have Three Premieres In One Day, And New Trailers Turn Up For Festival Favourites And Disney Animation

Maleficent

Three big films hit cinemas this weekend in the UK (one of them opens next week in America), with a fantasy blockbuster taking on a sci-fi action thriller and a Wild West comedy for box office glory. Angelina Jolie's Maleficent is likely to emerge triumphant, thanks to high expectations. But Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow is getting much more positive reviews. And Seth Macfarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West is bound to be popular escapist entertainment. Take time out to read our Maleficent review, Edge of Tomorrow review and see what we said about Seth MacFarlane in A Million Ways to Die.

To mark the launch of Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise and his costar Emily Blunt held an unprecedented triple premiere on two continents in one day. They started Wednesday morning at 9am with the massive world premiere in central London, where the film is set, then dashed across to Paris for a second premiere a few hours later at the location of the film's climactic battle. Then after a trans-Atlantic flight they turned up for an 11pm North American premiere in New York. Browse our photos from the world premiere of 'Edge Of Tomorrow' held at the BFI IMAX, London United Kingdom on Wednesday 28th May 2014 or check out Tom in a different suit at the New York premiere held at AMC Loews Lincoln Square.

Black And White (1999) Review

Good
A very unique and brutal subculture exists in America these days. It's a strange juxtaposition of harsh street life and uber-materialistic greed tempered with a sense of justifiability from a code of unwritten ethics. The world is that of the gangsta rappers, the ghetto boys, and the thug-life advocators that dominate the world of hip-hop and rap music. Black and White, the latest film by James Toback, explores this subculture that grows stronger with every new generation it affects.

The hardest thing about an outsider trying to infiltrate a subculture and explain it to the masses is that the truth is often lost in the translation. Toback throws together a huge canvas of characters and actors in attempt to create a clear picture of why white kids are motivated to impersonate black rappers' lifestyles and why rich whit guys treat black rappers like Arnold and Willis from Diff'rent Strokes.

200 Cigarettes Review

Weak
The bad news: This story of a bunch of New Yorkers on New Year's Eve, 1981, is so trite and stupid that it doesn't merit any attention whatsoever. The cast (playing uber-NYCers) are uniformly grating and obnoxious -- and Courtney Love as ringleader makes it even worse.

Coming Soon Review

Terrible
If Coming Soon is not the worst film of all time, it's damn near close. This horrifying movie follows three prissy, stuck-up New York City high-school girls whose two problems are 1) getting into college with the aid of bribes/daddy/lying and 2) having an orgasm (see if you can figure out that oh-so-clever title now). Kids, you can't make up shit like this. And oh, how I wish the writer hadn't made it up either. Not only is it in horrible taste, it's just plain horrible -- and oh, Mr. Gray, how sad I feel for you to be a part of this dreck.

All I Wanna Do Review

OK
Dead Poets Society it ain't.

This lighthearted comedy features the Teenage Girl Class of 1998 in a silly prep school that is about to do the unthinkable: admit boys. Amidst the bulimia and the hair dye pranks, there's not much learnin' to be done so why not hatch a plan to get the boys banned for life? All this culminates in an obviously re-edited (the film has lost 20-some minutes of running time and has earned a new, meaningless title) strike with the gals taking over the school.

Volcano Review

OK
Oh, there's nothing like a natural disaster to bring people together! That's the poorly masked theme ("They all look the same!") behind Volcano, the first really big disaster movie we've seen since, gosh, mid-February. It least this Volcanodoesn't blow -- figuratively speaking -- like Dante's Peak did, and that's mainly because it's so much more fun to watch Los Angeles be decimated by unceasing lava flow instead of a puny Pacific Northwest village.

Co-stars Anne Heche and Tommy Lee Jones prove more than able at evading not only the encroaching magma, but also the horde of bad actors that follow them throughout the movie. And while the film is full of creeping cheese, complete with death-defying leaps to safety, slow motion shots, and kitschy one-liners, I shock myself even by saying that, for the most part, it feels real. They even thought to include Dennis Woodruff's infamous car, the cheesiest of Hollywood landmarks, floating along in a river of fire. Where else would they think of that!? I really do love L.A...

Now And Then Review

OK
Let me just start by saying I'm probably not the best person in the world to be reviewing a film about the coming of age of four twelve-year old girls in suburban America. I'm going to give it my best shot--just bear in mind who you're dealing with here.

The cutesy premise of Now And Then is this: Now...Roberta (Rosie O'Donnell), Teeny (Melanie Griffith), Samantha (Demi Moore), and Chrissy (Rita Wilson) are gathering together to help Chrissy through her pregnancy. Then...the characters are the same, only 25 years younger, played by Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffman, and Ashleigh Aston Moore. The film plays out over the summer of 1970 (there's a whole lot more Then than Now), where the girls' perform a seance that leads them to investigate the mysterious death of a 12 year old boy, long since buried in the local cemetery.
