Aussie singer Gabriella Cilmi nearly turned her back on a music career - after her childhood piano teacher told her she'd never make it.
The 17 year old hit the music scene in 2008 with her breakout hit Sweet About Me, sweeping the board at the Aria awards and bagging nominations at the Brits and the MTV Europe Music Awards.
She is also up for the PRS Award for Most Performed Work for Sweet About Me at the 54th Ivor Novello Awards on Thursday (21May09).
But despite wowing a record label boss as a young teen, Cilmi almost abandoned her dreams at eight years old - when a piano tutor told the star she was wasting her time.
She tells WENN, "My piano teacher told me that I had no musicality. I was only eight! (She said) that I had nothing at all and that I should stop playing piano because I was taking up someone else's spot who would be more dedicated.
"She was a real evil lady, I didn't like her. I remember she had this red hair, and you just don't say that to an eight year old. I thought that was a little bit unfair."
