Actress Fran Drescher was left fuming when her efforts to help cancer victims turned into a late-night menace for the unsuspecting American public.

THE NANNY star - herself a cancer survivor - jumped at the chance to lend her distinctive voice to an AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY (ACS) recorded phone message to urge people to press Congress for more research funds.

The message was supposed to go out to phone lines nationwide during the afternoon - but a computer glitch left 46-year-old Drescher's dulcet tones waking people up in the middle of the night.

According to American newspaper the LOS ANGELES TIMES, a mortified Drescher and the ACS insisted the company hired to pull the switch on the pitch make a contribution to the cause.

A letter of apology is being sent to all those awakened.
