Ex-child Star Deanna Durbin Dead At 91

Fortune

Deanna Durbin, who received unprecedented fame and Fortune as a child star in the 1930s but quit Hollywood at the age of 26 following a string of mediocre movies in the late 1940s, has died, published reports said today (Wednesday). An announcement by her fan club said only that she was 91 but gave no cause of death nor date. In an interview with film historian David Shipman in 1983, Durbin noted that she was once the highest-paid star with the poorest material. Today I consider my salary as damages for having to cope with such complete lack of quality.

Storm Wipes Out Syndicated Tv

Fortune

Hurricane Sandy not only took down houses, trees, powerlines, traffic lights and billboards, it also took down virtually all the major syndicated television programs. Broadcasting and Cable observed that such shows as Entertainment Tonight, Judge Judy, and Wheel of Fortune were all eliminated from the Nielsen ratings chart last week because in much of the nation they were preemmpted by hurricane coverage. Anytime a show's coverage drops below 90 percent, B&C explained, Nielsen breaks it out of the ratings, which was the case for all nationally cleared shows for the entire week. Only two shows that are not cleared nationally made it onto the Nielsen list, NBCUniversal's Access Hollywood Live and Warner Bros.' Let's Ask America, an interactive game show that 14 Scripps-owned stations air.

Romney Would End Subsidy To Pbs

Fortune The National War Of Words

Mitt Romney's comment in a recent interview with Fortune magazine that he would eliminate subsidies to PBS, The National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities is predictably being hailed by many conservatives and denounced by many liberals. In the interview, Romney said that although he appreciates what those organizations do , "I just think they have to stand on their own rather than receiving money borrowed from other countries as our government does on their behalf." Romney was apparently referring to the $4.7 trillion the U.S. has borrowed from overseas countries, primarily China and Japan, to pay all of its bills. (PBS defenders point out that the government spent $444 million on PBS in 2012 -- which, they say, is about what it spends on defense in less than half a day.) In a statement to the Washington Post , PBS CEO Paula Kerger observed that 69 percent of voters oppose proposals to eliminate government funding for public broadcasting, which, she noted, "has sustained a 13-percent cut in its federal funds over the past two years. More severe cuts would be crippling." But the conservative Breitbart.com, commenting on Romney's statement, said, "The team of Romney/Ryan isn't going to stop with simply confronting the leftist media with a War Of Words. They're planning to hit the leftists where it really matters -- at the source -- by cutting off their funding."
