DO YOU REALIZE?? by Flaming Lips is set to be the official song of Oklahoma after all.
People living in the state had voted for the track to be given the honour, but this decision was overturned by the Oklahoma house of representatives.
Politicians voiced their disapproval of the band, objecting to their reputation for "using obscene language" and wearing "offensive" t-shirts.
However, governor Brad Henry is now set to step into the debate and issue an executive order confirming the song's status as the official state tune.
"A truly iconic rock 'n' roll band, [Flaming Lips] are proud ambassadors of their home state. They were clearly the people's choice, and I intend to honour that vote," Mr Henry said.
The band's music has won them numerous awards, critical acclaim and fans all over the world, he noted.
Prior to the announcement that Mr Henry was to step in, Flaming Lips posted a statement on their Myspace page, expressing disappointment at the vote in the house of representatives.
It read: "Regardless of what the minority in the house of representatives wish, the Flaming Lips remain proud ambassadors of the state."
The band added that they were proud to have won the public's backing in the state rock song ballot and expressed their hope that a way could be found to ensure this happened.
Now, it looks like the governor is set to grant this wish.
In the house of representatives vote, 48 were for the law which would have seen the song being passed and only 39 against, but support from 51 members was needed to grant approval for the legislation to be passed.
The track beat off competition from LET'S HAVE A PARTY by WANDA JACKSON and nine other songs in a public vote earlier this year.
