'We Were Here' is the first documentary to delve into the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco from when it was first identified in 1981, 30 years ago this year. It looks into how the city's inhabitants were affected and treated upon the realisation of the seriousness of the epidemic. It reached out to people all over the world, who pulled together, to try combat AIDS.
Directors David Weissman and Bill Weber interview people who were right at the centre of the trauma, people whose friends were killed by the disease. Using footage and images from back at the time of the outbreak, partnered with the raw emotion of the interviewees, 'We Were Here' gives the viewer a sense of what it was like to be living in San Francisco.
Weissman and Weber have also worked together on 'The Cockettes', which documented the famous theater troupe of hippies and drag queens from 1969-72.
Red Flag Releasing will be opening 'We Were Here' in New York on 9th September, Los Angeles on 16th September and other selected cities throughout September.
