For over 12 years Prospera and her daughter Miranda have been exiled by Prospera's brother to a baron island where they live a life of solitude accompanied only by spirits and one non-spiritual occupant; Caliban, the son of a witch who died just before the arrival of the two human souls.
When the magic yielding Prospera divines information that her betraying brother is travelling a boat nearing the island, she causes it to run aground on the coast of the magical island. Splitting the boat party up, Prospera plots to restore her daughter Miranda to her rightful place among the dignitaries in normal society.
In this adaptation of William Shakespear's classic tale director Julie Taymor has changed the gender of the sorcerer Prospero which allows a new perspective to be shed on the story.
