Val is a housekeeper in Sao Paulo living in her rich employers' estate, though she knows her place. As well as keeping the house and garden spotless and cooking the family meals, she is also a nanny to the teenage boy of the family, and has been a mother figure to him for 13 years. However, the routine is disrupted when her daughter shows up out of the blue, and she has some very different ideas about her mother's status within the family when Val tries to teach her the strict boundaries that exist. She doesn't see why there should be such a difference in social status between her mother and her mother's bosses, and her repeated disregard for the unspoken class rules threatens Val's position and tests the relationships of everyone in the family. And it doesn't help that the teenage boy no sees Val as less of a nanny and more of a second mother.
