In the book, 'Merchants of Doubt', Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway investigate the scientist that have downplayed the effects of tobacco smoke, acid rain, the ozone hole, global warming, and the chemical DDT. In this new documentary of the same name, the writers go in depth about how these scientist with political connections, suppressed the idea of regulating these issues, as it could lead to a socialist state taking over. This political influence is the main discussion debate of Oreskes, as she talks about how environmentalist have been perceived as 'reds under the bed' and 'watermelons', as they are apparently, 'green on the outside, red on the inside'.
