Will Atenton is a successful publisher living in New York with his wife, Libby and their two children. Wanting a change of pace, he quits his job and moves his family to their dream house in Morgan Creek, a sleepy New England town.
The family soon settle into their new life, with Libby starting to redecorate while her two daughters play. Will and Libby also grow closer, as a result of their relaxed lifestyle.
One day, Libby is decorating when she notices a series of numbers on the wall. It turns out to be the measurements of the children who had last lived in the house. Shortly afterwards, the children start having nightmares, which concern Will and Libby. Their concerns grow when they start seeing a shadowy figure standing outside their house.
Will does some research and discovers from his neighbour, Ann that three of the previous inhabitants of their dream house were murdered; and it is widely speculated that the woman and her two children that died in the house were killed by the woman's husband.
Will and Ann investigate the mystery further and realise that the rest of the story is much more horrifying than they first realised.
