Director: Jeff Howlett
During the early seventies, music was really all about motown and disco, at least for the black population. Rock 'n' roll was considered white music so when Detroit brothers Bobby and Dannis Hackney and their friend Bobbie Duncan formed protopunk band Death, getting signed to a label wasn't looking likely. Sure enough, nobody was willing to give them a chance and the boys disbanded soon after in 1977, just as punk bands such as the Ramones and the Sex Pistols were really making their mark, stashing away the demo tape that they were so proud of away in the attic of Bobby's house. However, nearly 30 years later the tape, amazingly, found its way out of its hideaway and was played to a new generation of fans who immediately appreciated the inspirational music that would from then on never be ignored again.
'A Band Called Death' is the heartening and truly hope-filled documentary on the first black punk band in the world. It was the Audience Award Winner at SXSW 2013 and has been directed by Jeff Howlett and Mark Covino in both their feature film debuts. The film will be available on VOD from May 24th 2013 and will hit movie theatres on June 8th.Starring: David Hackney
