"Unbearable"

peter Review

It's only 4 minutes and 44 seconds into peter when it dawns on you that this might be the worst movie you've ever seen. That's because the first 4:44 of the picture are spent with the mentally-challenged and nearly mute Peter (Edward) getting dressed, in silence, agonizing in its slowness and lack of any creativity whatsoever.

peter spends its next 86 minutes dissecting the sad, sad life of Peter, a semi-retarded lad living in an institution while maintaining a Matt Damon hairdo. When one of the institution's interns (Stevenson) befriends him, she tries to encourage his budding art talent while spatting with her drunk computer-salesman boyfriend. Some kind of bond is formed between them. She hates her life. He can't deal with his. If only life were this exciting and rich.

Sadly, peter remains as dull as its silent beginning for its entire running time. A little dullness might have been forgivable if peter had a soul, but alas that is sorely missing as well. And the lack of soul might also have been forgivable if peter was well-made, and unfortunately that's the worst part of the "film" altogether. peter is likely proud of its low-budget heritage, and it appears the only expense in the entire production was about 5 bucks for the price of the videotape it was shot on. That's right, peter is not a film, it's a video. I've seen amateur Christmas Day present-opening footage that is more professional. Stagey, lifeless, dull -- if there was anything positive to say about this thing I'd say it. You'll forgive my silence.

There's probably a heartwarming or heartbraking story somewhere in peter's themes. This, I'm sad to say, is decidedly not it.

petered out.
