Kronk's New Groove

"Weak"

Kronk's New Groove Review

By now you know the drill: Disney follows up just about every animated movie, large or small, with a quicky DVD that can't hope to compare with the original film.

Kronk's New Groove, the successor to the tragically underseen The Emperor's New Groove, is really no different. As the title suggests, the sequel focuses on Kronk (Patrick Warburton), a relatively minor character in the original film (he was the hapless and oblivious bodyguard of the villain), who's now made good in his life as a restaurateur.

Kronk is the star of three vignettes: Yzma (Eartha Kitt) has managed to become human again (never mind the tail she still has) and is wreaking havoc; Kronk's Jr. Chipmunk troop leadership brings him in contact with a rival troop -- and a love affair; and Kronk's dad (John Mahoney) shows up to see what his son is up to... leading to a sitcom-esque game of masquerade where everyone from the original movie (all actors reprising their voice performances) dresses up as a wife, child, or some other member of Kronk's phony life.

There's some comedy in here, but by and large the movie is skippable. Little kids will find it barely engaging. Adults may have fun with the video's self-referentiality (just like the original), but if you want to spend more time with these characters, you're probably better off just re-watching the original film.
