I.K.U.

I.K.U. Review

If I.K.U. isn't the ultimate "adult" party film, I don't know what is.

Best described as a Japanese porn movie heavily inspired by Blade Runner, I.K.U. stars a bunch of nubile Japanese women as a kind of sex robot, tasked with seeking out sexual experiences and reporting back to headquarters with her findings.

From the opening prologue crawl to the dystopian future to the use of "replicants" in its plot, the Blade Runner influence is obvious, but the similarities essentially end there. I.K.U. consists of seven vignettes with our robot heroine (played by seven different actresses) sexing up various men, women, and/or herself in Tokyo. There is no dialogue, at least none in English (and no subtitles). And only infrequent title cards explain the relationship between the robot, her HQ, and her mission. The sex is explicit but pixilated (per Japanese law). And the live action footage is intercut with digital animation -- often taking us inside one of the parties.

I'd love to say that the DVD makes some of this clearer -- but aside from clarifying that the director is a woman(!), it's more non-subtitled Japanese, tiny vignettes behind the scenes and deleted scenes that tell you absolutely nothing.

All of this is best experienced with about an eighth of your attention span, with the rest focused on, say, getting trashed, reading a magazine, or enjoying your own version of the activities occurring on screen. As for what kind of a recommendation this is, well, I'm leaving that up to you.
