Company K Review

Not many people talk about WWI -- presumably not many people know much about it.

Based on William March's memior of his time in the trenches, Robert Clem turns his camera -- well, his Super 16 camera -- to a faithful, personal, and introspective look at the war -- an obvious labor of love from someone with a deep interest in this poorly understood era.

Clem's film has surprising production values and is full of period detail: Authentic uniforms and weaponry are used to outfit our heroes -- a group of soldiers on the front lines in Europe. Clem's (and March's) soldiers are wide-eyed and ignorant, all good old American boys not quite sure what the fuss is all about (and riddled with misinformation). But they soldier on, experiencing the horrors of war as only someone in the trenches can.

The ensemble cast and wartime setting make the movie feel a lot like a Saving Private Ryan, and the story arc is surprisingly similar. But of course, on his shoestring budget, Clem can't begin to approach the monster scale required to properly stage a war movie, and long stretches feel like they're playing out in someone's backyard. This is a forgivable sin, considering the epic difficulty that such a task would require. I'm less gracious about the decision to have an apparation of Jesus appear on the battlefield, though.

Clem is to be commended for his ambition with Company K, as the end result is a very watchable and often quite good war flick. But his sense of ambition could be his greatest downfall here -- let's hope for something a little more down to earth with the next outing.

Consider yourself gassed.
