A Week In Movies Featuring: James Bond, Anchorman, Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby, Cannes Festival Hots Up, Will Smith Slap-Gate And More

25th May 2012

The biggest news of the week was our first glimpse of the new James Bond film, as a teaser trailer for Skyfall was released online and in cinemas on Monday. It's a belter of a preview, making this look like an unusually edgy and darkly funny 007 adventure, which isn't surprising considering that it's being directed by Sam Mendes, who has made films as varied as Jarhead and Revolutionary Road. Skyfall opens in the UK at the end of October.

Meanwhile, geeks all over the world were overexcited by a pair of hilariously surreal teasers for Anchorman: The Legend Continues, a sequel to the 2004 cult hit starring Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and David Koechner. All four appear in the clips poking fun at their ridiculous 1970s characters, clothing and haircuts. This tells us nothing about the film, which opens next year, but will keep fans gagging for more.

Baz Luhrmann's big new version of The Great Gatsby,

And a third high-profile trailer this week was for Baz Luhrmann's big new version of The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. No one does full-scale period epics like Luhrmann (see Moulin Rouge and Australia), and the fact that he's shooting this one in 3D is even more enticing. It'll also be interesting to see what he does with F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic source novel, a somewhat bleak story of a high-society love triangle in swinging 1920s Long Island.

In the South of France, the competition is hotting up at the Cannes Film Festival, with eagerly awaited films by such directors as Ken Loach (Looking for Eric), Lee Daniels (Precious), David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method), Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), John Hillcoat (The Road) and Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James). The red carpet was abuzz with movies stars like Brad Pitt, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, as well as musicians-turned-actors Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson, Macy Gray. The festival wraps up this weekend with its prestigious awards ceremony.

Meanwhile in London, Cameron Diaz, Chace Crawford and Cheryl Cole were on hand for the UK premiere of the ensemble pregnancy romantic-comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting. The film also stars Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, Chris Rock and Dennis Quaid. In a dramatic stretch, Cole plays a dance-competition TV show judge in the film.

Will Smith. Men in Black 3 - UK film premiere held at the Odeon Leicester Square - Arrivals.. London, England - 16.05.12.

And finally, in the wake of Will Smith's slap-happy reaction to a puckered-up Ukrainian journalist in Moscow, the paparazzi back home in New York taunted him with shouts of "Give us a kiss!" while he signed autographs for fans outside the David Letterman Show. Smith is all smiles, but will he keep his lips to himself?
