A Week In Movies featuring: The Amazing Spider-man, The Edinburgh International Film Festival, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Beasts of the Southern Wild & much more

This week's big Leicester Square premiere was for the franchise reboot of The Amazing Spider-man, which saw stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans greeting fans and paparazzi on the red carpet under a gigantic spider and webbing that covered the whole square. The film opens on 4th July.

Then on Wednesday, the 66th Edinburgh International Film Festival kicked off with the premiere of William Friedkin's Killer Joe, which was attended by veteran actors Jim Broadbent, Brian Cox and Elliott Gould. They're not in the film, but are on juries during the festival. The festival has red carpet premieres planned every night over the next 10 days as some 20 films have their world premieres.

Speaking of Hollywood veterans, stars including Kathleen Turner, Christopher Walken and Ethan Hawke turned out in New York for a 50th anniversary celebration of Shakespeare in the Park, held in honour of Al Pacino. The event also featured a reading of Romeo and Juliet by Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep. A paparazzi video caught Turner, Walken and Hawke on their way in, plus others including Chelsea Clinton.

Meanwhile in cinemas, distributors are indulging in some counter-programming to avoid the Euro2012 championships. So there aren't any big blockbusters until Spider-man. This week's biggest titles are the fanboy geek-out Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the surprisingly enjoyable romantic comedy The Five-year Engagement, starring Emily Blunt and Jason Segel.

The biggest movie news this week was the release of the second, much more detailed trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2. We get to see much more of Kristen Stewart as the newly vamped-up Bella, plus a real sense of the vast scale of the film's climactic battle.

And for more adventurous filmgoers, the most interesting trailer this week was or Beasts of the Southern Wild, the Sundance winner that also took Cannes by storm last month. A slice of Americana, the film looks feisty and gorgeously shot, with strong performances from an unknown cast.
