A Week In Movies featuring: Tom Cruise, Cosmopolis, Django Unchained, Oliver Stone's Savages, Chris Pine & much more

15th June 2012

Tom Cruise seems to be everywhere at the moment, as his new film Rock of Ages has just opened all over the world, prompting him to indulge in rather a lot of rock-star antics on red carpets. And he's already throwing himself into his new sci-fi epic Oblivion, which is now shooting in New York with costars Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough and Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. A paparazzi camera caught him this week filming on a busy Manhattan street.

'Robert Pattinson starring in Cosmopolis

This week's other big release in the UK is David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, based on the Don DeLillo book about a young billionaire stuck in a traffic jam on his way to get a haircut. But then this particular billionaire is played by Robert Pattinson, and he gets up to a lot more than just riding in his limo. Cronenberg and Pattinson faced a love-hate reaction to the film in Cannes, and are now taking it to audiences.

Quentin Tarantino's next movie doesn't open until Christmas, but fans were in a lather this week over the first trailer for Django Unchained, a Western starring Jamie Foxx as a freed slave out for revenge. The film costars Leonardo DiCaprio as well as Tarantino veterans Michael Fassbender and Christoph Waltz. And the trailer makes it look unmissable.

'Aaron Johnson starring in Oliver Stone's Savages

For non-action fans, Chris Pine stars in the comedy-drama People Like Us, which also has a new trailer this week. Based on true events, it's about a young salesman whose whole life collapses just as he gets some startling information: he has a 30-year-old sister (Elizabeth Banks) he's never met. It looks rather intensely heartwarming, but also smart and funny.

Meanwhile, the trailer for Oliver Stone's new film Savages hints that he's back in Natural Born Killers mode, with an energetic, violent thriller about two young California drug dealers (Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson) who take on a Mexican drug cartel to rescue their kidnapped girlfriend (Blake Lively). Typical for Stone, the cast is packed with veteran scene-stealers like John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek.
