A Week In Movies Featuring: Seth MacFarlane's Ted, James Bond Skyfall, Philip Seymour Hoffman's The Master, The Wachowski's Cloud Atlas, The Hobbit and Much More!

For a second week, film studios are avoiding major new releases, letting The Dark Knight Rises rule the box office. In the UK, alternative programming comes from Mark Wahlberg's comedy Ted, although pretty much everyone is watching the Olympics, of course. For American audiences, there's a remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell, which is perhaps the same audience as the Batman movie.

Instead of new movies, we've had several new trailers this week. Biggest of them all is an action-packed preview of Skyfall, the new James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and an evil blond Javier Bardem. After the earlier teaser, this reveals a much stronger sense of the story without giving much away. Not to mention the raised anticipation after seeing Craig skydiving with the Queen in the Olympics opening ceremony.

No one expected the trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master, about the founder of a Scientology-like sci-fi cult. As with Anderson's There Will Be Blood, this looks like a riveting, edgy film with astounding, award-worthy performances, this time from Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.

We also had our first glimpse of Tom Tykwer and Lana and Andy Wachowski's Cloud Atlas, based on the sprawling novel about various characters through a the whole of human history. The trailer is nearly six minutes long and shows a starry cast including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent in multiple roles interconnected through time. It looks pretty extraordinary.

Hanks also pops up in a paparazzi video this week, looking relaxed as he goes shopping in New York's SoHo district with his son and daughter.

And in film news this week, the biggest story was that Peter Jackson is making three - not two - movies from The Hobbit. The first chapter, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, still comes out at Christmas, but he was having trouble getting the rest of the plot into the second film. So he decided to incorporate material from JRR Tolkien's appendices to make it a bigger saga that connects more closely into The Lord of the Rings. Now we can look forward to part two in December 2013, and then part three in 2014.
