Manna From Heaven Review

Bad
The five precocious Burton sisters of Buffalo, NY have given us a precocious film about a group of people so hateful we are forced to try our best to simply ignore them. How's that for skipping the first day of Filmmaking 101?

Manna From Heaven is the story of a Buffalo family who one day discover $20,000 "raining from heaven," wisely decide to split it up, and then go on their merry ways. A decade or so later, every last one of them has grown up to be a loser, having squandered his or her (mostly her) share of the loot. The lone exception is Theresa (Ursula Burton... well of course the good one is going to be played by a Burton sister!) who has become an ash-on-the-forehead nun. In fact, Theresa becomes convinced that the 20 grand of so long ago was not a gift but a loan, and that they must now "pay it back."

V Review

Very Good
Independence Day ripped off the far superior 1983 TV miniseries, V, correctly assuming that the public has only a short-term memory. The pervasive image of flying saucers hovering over every major metropolitan city in the world is undeniably creepy, especially when the visitors are not our friends. V's mice-munching lizards, disguised in human form as soap opera-friendly actors in bright red Nazi uniforms, wore false smiles and were much scarier than any computer generated menace proposed by ID:4.

What we're quick to forget is that TV movies from the early 80s were actually pretty frightening, what with Ronald Reagan threatening to bomb the Russkies and all. The Day After caused many a sleepless night as Jason Robards marched through a nuclear nightmare. While the good guys ultimately score a point for justice at the end of V, much of the film is devoted to the insidious alien plot to corral humans into concentration camps for food. Yum, yum, yum. A few supporting characters get picked off in the first hour or two when they try to prove that "the truth is out there." We're gonna snatch you, and then we're gonna eat you!

Drive Me Crazy Review

Bad

With a script recycled from the scraps of scores of other prom climax movies, "Drive Me Crazy" might just be the most generic high school flick ever.

Melissa Joan Hart, whose pert but plain, TV-sized personality (she's "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch") can't carry a feature film, stars as Nicole, the super-organized Miss Congeniality of her school's in crowd, who finds herself dateless for the biggest dance in school history when her nondescript, jocko beau throws her over for a cheerleader he landed on top of when run out of bounds during a basketball game.

Meanwhile, Nicole's sullen, rebellious next door neighbor, Chase (Adrian Grenier, "The Adventures of Sebastian Cole"), has been dumped by his freaky chick (as demonstrated by her two-tone hair -- oooo!) girlfriend because he won't join her in her latest protest movement against medical testing on lab rats.
