Jezebel Review

Good
Jezebel's southern Civil War-era setting and its brazen female lead make it seem a lot like Gone With the Wind, but this Bette Davis Best Actress-winner can't hold a candle to the successor which would arrive the following year. Davis is the draw here, playing a bachelorette who no one seems to be able to control -- and she of course is keen to keep it that way. The histrionics come across as quaint today, and even Davis's performance can't hold the film up all by its lonesome.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Review

OK
James Thurber hated this adaptation of his short story, and I'm no huge fan of it, either. Danny Kaye is frenetically interested as Walter Mitty, a man so bored with his job and his life that he daydreams himself into fantastic situations (thug, gambler, wild west outlaw, and so on), with hilarious results. Well, not that hilarious... the film is repetitious to a fault, with Kaye alternately convincing himself he's dreaming his situations and sure they're all legit. It all gets old after half an hour, and you've got 80 minutes to go.

Woman Of The Year Review

Excellent
Cute Hepburn-Tracy vehicle, though Spence looks about 20 years older than Katharine in this rendition, which has his crass sports reporter wooing her society maven and astute political columnist. Opposites attract, and before you know it the two are married. But once she is named "woman of the year," our poor sap hero finds himself neglected and put out that he never gets to see his wife. This is the first of many Tracy & Hepburn movies, and the chemistry's not quite there yet in this one. Some impressively funny scenes and a hilarious ending redeem the long stretches of predictability.
