Fantasia Barrino has served up another defeat for her fellow American Idol finalist DIANA DEGARMO - by keeping her off the top of the American charts.

Barrino's version of I BELIEVE stormed to the top of the charts last week (30JUN04) and has stayed there for a second week - keeping her rival's version of the same song off the top.

DeGarmo, who lost the Idol contest in May (04) by just one per cent was expected to take her version of the song, penned by former Idol star TAMYRA GRAY, to the top this week, but she sold only 65,000 copies - almost 20,000 less than Barrino.

But DeGarmo is far from upset about her number two debut - she's just happy to be on the radio.

She says, "I was sitting in the car and my mom put it on the radio and I got all teary-eyed. My mom was like, 'Are you crying?' I was like, 'No,' looking out the window. I was like, 'I'm not crying, I'm too tough to cry.'

"But it kind of gave me that feeling of accomplishment because we've come so far, done so many things. We've worked so hard, put time and money into things that didn't end up working so well and falling apart."
