The actor - who has three daughters, Clara, 14, Esther, eight, and seven-year-old Jamiyan with wife Eve Mavrakis - plays the lover of Jim Carrey's character in new movie 'I Love You Phillip Morris' but admits he would rather get close to the 'Capote' star.
He quipped: "I'd like to be Philip Seymour Hoffman's boyfriend. I think we'd make a good couple.
"We'd look good, we'd look slightly odd and we'd go to interesting parties and people would be interested in us. I don't know him, but I'd like to be his boyfriend."
The 38-year-old star has previously played gay characters in 'Velvet Goldmine' and 'Scenes of a Sexual Nature' and he can't understand why people are so fascinated by those types of roles.
Ewan - who portrayed a miner who played in a brass band in 'Brassed Off' - said in an interview with The Scotsman newspaper: "It's just not an issue. As an actor you're stepping into the shoes of people in life and people in life are gay or straight or both or whatever.
"People never say, 'How did you manage to play a miner, that must've been really difficult?' But the fact that it's a man who likes to be with other men it's somehow still weirdly an issue. I don't think that it is. I liked very much the nature of the writing, that it's romantic. I like that it's a gay romance."
