Party leaders in the House of Commons pushed the legislation through on Tuesday (05Feb13) after Members of Parliament voted 400 to 175 in favour of enabling religious organisations to conduct same-sex marriages.
In order to become law, the legislation must now pass a vote in the House of Lords - but a slew of stars are ecstatic with the latest development and took to their Twitter.com pages to celebrate.
In a post Hurley writes, "Thank you to the clear majority of Mps who voted in support of Gay Marriage", while Wood told fans, "UK Parliament has voted for gay marriage. The majority has spoken and the fight for equality continues..."
Little Britain star Walliams declared, "Thank you Mps for voting in support of Gay Marriage. You did the right thing" and singer Geri Halliwell adds, "I'm so proud of Britain, thank you to government for voting on same sex marriage, fantastic and inspirational!"
Actor Stephen Fry declared, "Whoop!!!!!! 400-175!!!! Now that's a majority!! A great day in the slow but glorious history of British progress and fairness."
