The Women On The 6th Floor Review

Very Good
Spiky dialog and terrific characters make this French class comedy thoroughly enjoyable, even if there's not much to it. An especially strong cast and energetic direction add a zing if personality to both characters and settings.

In 1962 Paris, wealthy broker Jean-Louis (Luchini) and his wife Suzanne (Kiberlain) live in his family flat, oblivious to the Spanish maids who occupy tiny rooms on the top floor and gather in the park to gossip about their bosses. It's not until Jean-Louis and Suzanne hire new arrival Maria (Verbeke) to work for them that they discover this world of labourers. And Jean-Louis embraces it, finding new satisfaction in helping to make their lives better while flirting quietly with Maria. But Suzanne suspects something else entirely.

Of Gods And Men [Des Hommes Et Des Dieux] Review

Essential
With very little action, this film builds almost unbearable tension by carefully examining some moral questions in a precarious situation that's based on true events. And in the process, it becomes one of the most important films in recent memory.

Christian (Wilson) is the leader of a group of eight French monks living in a Catholic monastery in rural Algeria. Their only mission is to pray and serve the local people, and over the generations they have become an integral part of the community. When fundamentalist tensions spill into violence in the country around them, they have a difficult decision to make: abandon the people and flee home to France or stand up to the injustice. Opinions are split, but they opt to seek an answer together. And their decision could cost them their lives.

1999 Madeleine Review

Weak
Snip-snip, Short Cuts. Magnolia, make room. The Decalogue, find a different audience. You guys have company. This company: a 10-year, 10-film series following 10 intersecting French men and women. The first part of the first act in this sequence, 1999 Madeleine, is a film that I am sure I will praise when I have seen the entire, 10-film sequence. It is also a film that, at this point in time, is so incomplete, such an incompetent piece of storytelling, that part of the audience uttered a few laughs when the words "To Be Continued" appeared at the end.

Such is the fate of fifteen-hour films.
