Ethan Hawke credits his Before Sunset director Richard Linklater and co-star Julie Delpy with helping him out of his depression following his divorce from Uma Thurman. Hawke admits he "couldn't find the joy any longer" when he started shooting the sequel to 1995's Before Sunrise in 2003. He says, "Around the time of Before Sunset, I just didn't know who I was anymore. I had gotten so depressed that I couldn't find the joy any longer. "But working with Rick (Linklater) and Julie, my old friends from Before Sunrise, helped me a lot." Once filming had finished, Hawke sought further solace at the theatre. He adds, "Since the theatre was my first love, and there's something humbling about the theatre, I just went back there. I wanted to touch my own past a little bit. "It all coincided with a sense that I needed to rebuild myself after my divorce."
