Estelle Axton, co-founder of the legendary STAX RECORDS CO has died - She was 85.

Axton died of natural causes on Tuesday (24FEB04) at Saint Francis Hospital's hospice in Memphis, Tennessee.

The musicians on the soul record label, which generated hits from such stars as Isaac Hayes, Sam And Dave, OTIS REDDING JR, Rufus Thomas and THE STAPLE SINGERS, called Axton LADY A.

Hayes says, "You didn't feel any backoff from her, no differentiation that you were black and she was white. Being in a town where that attitude was plentiful, she just made you feel secure... She was like a mother to us all."

Axton and other family members went on to establish the FRETONE label which produced RICK DEES' 1977 hit DISCO DUCK.
