LEONARDO DiCAPRIO is putting pressure on movie executives at Warner BROS to find a director for a new movie adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL - or he'll pull out of the project.

The AVIATOR star is refusing to sign on to play ROBERT JORDAN in the movie until a director is announced.

If he does agree to play Hemingway's teacher character, who becomes a guerrilla during the Spanish Civil War, he'll become the third actor to take on the part.

Gary Cooper played Jordan, alongside Ingrid Bergman, in the 1943 adaptation and JOHN RONANE starred in a TV adaptation in 1965.
