Teen actress Emmy Rossum managed to convince an Alaskan bear not to attack when she was on vacation as a child - by singing to it.
The 18-year-old brunette, who stars opposite Gerard Butler in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, was on vacation with her mother in Alaska when she was seven, when she was approached by the grizzly beast.
She recalls, "I was out on the porch of our cabin very early in the morning and I was all alone, writing in journal.
"I looked up and there was a rustle in the bushes, so I looked backed down 'cause I didn't see anything. And then I heard another rustle and I looked up and there was the most enormous grizzly bear, standing on its hind legs right in front of me, looking at me!
"I remembered that when I first got to Alaska, the park ranger told me that if I ever see a bear, don't run, don't whistle 'cause he'll think you're a bird and he'll eat you - and sing, for whatever reason I don't know.
"I don't know why, but the first thing that popped into my mind was OVER THE RAINBOW, which I proceeded to belt out and then he kind of looked at me quizzically and then just walked away. But I wasn't sure if he preferred JUDY GARLAND's rendition."10/01/2005 21:31
